Body Art Forms and Applications

Environmental Health Inspects both Body Art Studios and Body Artists to ensure that tattoos and body piercings are administered in as safe and healthy as possible.

Body art (tattooing and body piercing) is becoming and increasingly common and accepted practice. However, it is not without its risks. Environmental Health strives to control those risks that are related primarily to blood-borne pathogens (Hepatitis, MRSA, etc.).

Body art studios are inspected to ensure appropriate sterilization techniques are used, single use items are not reused, and preventable sources of infection minimized.

State-wide body art regulations went into effect on October 6, 2023. Existing artists and studios have until October 6, 2024, to meet state-wide requirements.

Until compliance, all existing body art studios and artists should continue to comply with local health department rules and regulations.

If you have questions about the state-wide regulations, please give your county environmental health office a call or view state-wide requirements updates at Georgia Department of Public Health’s Body Art page.
